I have a love hate relationship with mascaras. And by that I mean I love one mascara and don’t really get on with anything else. Simple. But, you know me, the second I see a hype forming around a product, you know I can’t help but give it a go.
Introducing, L’Oreal Lash Paradise Extatic Mascara. This little rose-gold tub has certainly been doing it rounds in the blogosphere, becoming the focus of many an Instagram picture and receiving its fair share of glowing reviews, so, let’s be honest, it wasn’t going to be long before it ended up in my hands on its way to the checkout in Boots. Not forgetting to mention those persistent comments that this is a pretty good dupe for the Too Faced Better Than Sex Mascara and name-aside, we all know that that was a mascara that I actually enjoyed, which is pretty impressive coming from a girl who has only really fallen in love with the Maybelline Lash Sensational mascara for the last three-four years. It’s that good. Which also means it is pretty hard to beat.
But, I am always on the lookout for a new love, and with L’Oreal mascaras receiving high-praise in general, I was excited to try this out. It’s affordable, the packaging is right up my street and it has a high-end dupe, it was definitely worth a try! Here are my thoughts on the much-hyped and talked about mascara thas has got the Blogosphere all excited!
My thoughts? Well, first things first, this is a drugstore offering so it’s pretty purse friendly than compared to a high-end option. It does sit at the slightly higher end of the drugstore price range and you don’t get a whopping amount of product (only 6.4ml) which is visible when you actually buy the mascara, the packaging definitely feels ‘small’. Whether this is a good thing or not is down to you. The one benefit is that mascara doesn’t/shouldn’t last long anyway, with most experts suggesting throwing it after 3 months, so the sizing may feel as if you’re wasting less product when it comes to that cut off time. But of course, this all depends on whether you listen to the experts or not (I personally just keep an eye out when using my mascara, if it feels different, doesn’t smell/look right, that’s when I tend to chuck it as opposed to keeping a specific timer on it).
The brush is a thick and round bristled with a little dip in the middle. I personally prefer a more tapered brush as I only have tiny lashes as it is and this can turn the job a little messy, especially when trying to reach those pesky inner lashes. I’d also recommend brushing a little bit of the mascara off before you use it, the brush really grabs on to the product and wiping the excess off really makes the difference between clumpy and volumised.
All-in-all, I do like the finish. My lashes have length, are pigmented and they just look pretty good all-around. For me, this did lack thickness and volume and I found that one too many coats turned my mascara overly clumpy and very wet. Your best bet for the best results is to apply a layer, let it dry completely and then apply another. Two coats are definitely all your need to create length before you go onto spider legs. But, the best result with this mascara is to give it a base coat underneath. Grabbing my trusty Maybelline Lash Sensational and applying that first, gives the Lash Paradise something to grip onto and the coats apply so much nicer. My lashes are thicker, have a really impressive amount of length and hold a curl nicely. Applying two mascaras make the job a little longer, but for me, they accompany each other perfectly, and the result is worth the extra faff.
My lashes do look fluttery soft as claimed and they hold up throughout the day too. No smudging or flaking, they look just as beautifully pigmented, long and curled as they did when I first applied the mascara.
Is it a dupe? Well, I’m not entirely convinced, but there is no denying it is pretty damn similar to the Too Faced Better Than Sex mascara and on first impressions, you may even not notice a difference. For me, I still do prefer the Too Faced mascara, but the L’Oreal version is the perfect budget option. I adore the pink metallic packaging that feels luxurious and weighted a la Too Faced and the results are ever so slightly better, for example, I don’t feel the need to apply a mascara underneath. But only a by a minuscule amount… I do feel as if Better Than Sex gives my lashes a little bit more volume than the Lash Paradise doesn’t instantly give me on its own. But, as I said, the difference is minuscule and not necessarily worth the £7 price difference.
Overall, the L’oreal Lash Paradise mascara has firmly made its place in my makeup bag. Yes, I like the result better with another mascara underneath but you can most certainly embrace it on its own too and still have the finish look fabulous. If you adore a fluttery look that gives your lashes extra length and especially if your lashes are blonde/light brown and you’re looking for a mascara that is intensely black. The L’Oreal Lash Paradise mascara might be right up your street! As far as mascara’s go… this is seriously impressive. And it’s drug store. What more could you want?!
