What I love About Autumn

“Autumn carries more gold in its pocket than all the other seasons” -Jim Bishop

Ok, ok, I know…. I’m slightly early to the whole ‘Autumn’ thing but honestly, ever since our two-week Summer ended, I have been secretly (well, not so secretly if you follow me on Twitter) wishing for Autumn to come its merry way. It almost seems a blogger requirement to adore Autumn but for as long as I can remember I have always craved for chilly air, short days and nights surrounded by blankets and fairy lights. I have fond memories of walking around London on beautiful grey days (yes I actually like cloudy days), early morning walks in the Autumn sunshine and cuddling up around the fire with Harry Potter on in the background whilst it rains outside.

I think it’s because I associate Autumn with refreshing and re-starting. Gone are the humid, heavy days of Summer that have made way for something calmer and clearer. I’m ready for hot chocolate, movie marathons, rain, clouds, frosty mornings, early nights and pumpkins. Gimme all the pumpkins.

It Feels Like a New Start

Even though I officially left school six years ago, I still get that whole ‘back to school’ feeling when September rolls around. I may not have to go and try on school uniform (the worst) or go skipping down the aisles of Woolworths picking my lunch bag for the year (those were the days!), I still feel as if September offers us a new start. That feels fresh and doesn’t include half the pressure new year does.

With the fresh air comes the need for a new wardrobe. Even if I don’t spend all my earnings on ASOS for all my Autumn essentials, there is still something that feels ‘new’ about swapping out my Summer clothing and replacing them with cozy knits and scarfs. I think in England we do not always get a distinctive change between Spring and Summer so the switch is gradual where as between Summer and Autumn it seems more instant. All I know is that I love that feeling of starting over. And hey, I might not go to school or university anymore, but there is nothing wrong with buying a boatload of new stationary.

The Cosiness

Honestly, what is better than wearing cozy PJ’s, snuggled up with a ridiculous amount of blankets, fairy lights on, candles lit, watching Great British Bake Off?  Add a hot chocolate, a log fire, and the Harry Potter box set into the mix and you have truly got yourself the most perfect Autumn evening. Gone are the nights of having to alternate between opening your windows because it’s all of a sudden 50 million degrees and closing them because the entire insect population is now having a party in your room. Autumn evenings over everything else. Always.

This also brings me back to clothing. Is there anything more comfy than massive chunky knit or fluffy jumpers? I’m not a big fan of Summer clothing, I’d much rather be comfy and cozy and that is why Autumn fashion is truly the best. And easy? Just reach into your wardrobe, grab a jumper, jeans and boots and you’re good to go. Perfect!

The Air

I love the Summer heat but give me the fresh coolness Autumn air any day. I don’t even necessarily like the cold but there is just something I like about the fresh, crisp air as you’re walking along. I mean, it’s better than over heating and walking down the high street like a sweaty mess isn’t it?

The TV Shows

I know the world kinda revolves around Netflix and streaming now so you can watch whatever you want, whenever you want to, but we all got to admit, the TV is just so much better in Autumn, isn’t it? Like, hello X Factor, ready to be a slave to you again every weekend. I’ve already mentioned it but we’ve already welcomed back the return of the Great British Bake Off, yes it’s not the same as the BBC version, but it is still in a tent and it’s still all about baking and that’s good enough for me. And hey, we still get to look at Paul Hollywood for a good 45 minutes each week. Not forgetting to mention The Apprentice, the show of all shows. I, for one, am very excited to sit in front of my television starting about now all the way to Christmas.

The Colours

Hello burnt oranges, reds and browns! The colours of Spring and Summer really are beautiful (and very Instagram worthy) but there is something so very romantic about walking around a woods or park and seeing piles of leaves on the ground and all the beautiful colours of Autumn. Also, I may be twenty-two, but does seeing conkers makes anyone really excited? I used to love collecting them as a kid on walks! Oh, and pumpkins… of course!

Hello Christmas!

Ok so Autumn welcomes tons of holidays (Halloween, Thanksgiving) but we all know that Christmas is the most exciting and for me, the second it hits September, I’m already starting to get excited for the 25th day of the twelve month. Christmas is basically round the corner right?! We can basically start the countdown right? And as we all know, supermarkets like to get all their Christmas stuff in nice and early (advent calendars… wrapping paper, the lot!) so I think that September is more than an acceptable time to get excited! Bring. It. On!
