Changing for the seasons
Oh, Spring. I love you. You’re warm and sunny but there’s still that cool breeze and humidity hasn’t interrupted the clear air yet. As I type this, the sun is streaming through my window, Ed Sheeran’s album is playing in the background and I’m thinking it’s about time I dusted off my sunglasses and rummaged through my wardrobe for a t-shirt and light jacket. I’m more than ready to hang up my parka coat and stash away the Winter boots but alongside browsing ASOS for Summer clothes, I’m also changing up a few of my makeup and skincare bits and bobs ready for the new season.
Everything gets that little bit lighter, my makeup tends to steer away from the bronze’s and browns to pinks and peaches and I slowly get to a point where I can’t do my really quick leg-shaving job in the shower and actually have to concentrate on getting my pins Summer ready. I personally love making these little changes from Winter to Spring, just like I love the longer days.
These are the products I’ve been incorporating into my routine. Some of these are old, long-time, trusty favourites and others are new loves that I wish I found earlier. Also, the rose gold sunglasses are from Southbeach at ASOS. Sadly, they’ve sold out but I’ve linked a similar pair so you can still get your rose-gold, reflective sunglasses fix!
Without further ado, read on to find out the beauty essentials I’m loving as we’re stepping into Spring!
Soap and Glory
When the days started to get that little bit warmer, the first thing I wanted to do was refresh my skin that was stuck in the Winter rut. The last thing I wanted to do when it was near freezing outside was stand around moisturising and then waiting for it all to sink in, so I’ll admit my skin wasn’t in it’s very best condition.
I instantly reached for my trusty Soap and Glory ‘The Scrub of Your Life’ body scrub and got to work. Not only is this beautifully scented with lots of fruity and floral notes; this little squeezy tub of goodness really works. When in touch with water, this lathers up leaving your skin feeling so incredibly soft but also clean. The scrub itself isn’t too intense making it perfect for regular use to keep dry skin at bay and providing the perfect base for moisturiser or body oil. Whichever floats your soft-skin boat.
I was so excited for the new Wilkinson Sword range designed to make the job of shaving quick and easy without missing any vital steps such as moisturising or applying shower gel/conditioner first. The Wilkinson Sword Intuition Sensitive Care razor* allows you to lather and shave at the same time with no extra effort required from you. This has sped up my shaving time considerably allowing me extra hair drying time (and we all know this is essential!) and also means I can watch an extra episode of Friends before bed…
Don’t worry if you suffer from sensitivity either, this has added Aloe and Vitamin E leaving your skin feeling beautifully soft without any irritation. Quite literally one of my favourite shower time additions, ever!
The Hair Oil
Hair oil is so beneficial for your hair all year round but if you haven’t already added a hair oil into your routine, now is a perfect time! Trust me, your hair will love you for it. Perfect for taming unruly frizz (story of my life!), helping protect the shafts and ends of your hair and adding much-needed moisture, running a small amount of oil thought your hair (avoid the roots!) can truly make all the difference.
I love the OGX Renewing Morrocan Argon Oil offering; it’s lightweight so still allows your hair to feel ‘normal’ and volumised and a little truly goes a long way. I apply this after every hair wash when my hair is still damp and if my ends are feeling a little dry before then, a tiny tiny amount helps that right out!
Soap & Glory
I’m just going to say it, the reason I’m including this on a Spring post is the scent. It’s really nice, subtle but present. It’s almost watermelon mixed with peace. I’m honestly awful at explaining scents but it’s incredibly light and it doesn’t linger but it’s fresh and was made for Spring.
The Soap and Glory Speed Plump Moisturiser is really lightweight and my skin feels so lovely and refreshed once I’ve applied this in the morning. I personally find it non-greasy and cooling on the skin and sink so in beautifully. My only pet peeve with this product is that it lacks SPF which is so essential for preventing sun damage and ageing but it’s nothing an additional product can’t fix. Not ideal, but the moisturising properties of this are so lovely I don’t mind the extra step.
I’ll admit, when I heard that Bourjois were changing the formula of the much loved Healthy Mix Foundation*, I was initially sceptical. After being a makeup bag staple for many years I was slightly worried the new one wouldn’t be the same, but… I’m more than happy to admit I was wrong (so, so wrong)! In fact, I adore the new formula. It’s light, beautifully dewy and has incredible lasting power that means I don’t have to worry about it all day.
If you’re into more heavier coverages, this may be one to give a miss but for those who love a lighter base, this is such a fabulous choice. I don’t know about you, but, for me, there is nothing worse than on a hot day feeling my foundation start to move. But, because this is so lightweight, you can barely feel it on the skin and combine this with the lovely, fresh finish, you’re truly onto a winner. I’m just gonna throw it out there… I think THIS is the foundation of the Summer.
I’m a pretty lazy girl when it comes to my brows, quick brush, quick addition of wax and I’m good to go but when Rimmel launched their new Brow This Way products, I was all over them. If you’re after thick, defined Cara Delevingne brows, then the Shake Filling Powder* is truly your product. It’s quick, effortless and the finish amazes me every time.
My only tiny ‘meh’? I wish there was a lighter colour, even the one aimed at blondes is just a touch too dark for me and I’m naturally pretty dark (as my roots will quite happily tell you…). But, on those days I am feeling slightly daring – and I’m loving bold brows for Spring/Summer – this is lovely. The pigmentation is incredible, the lasting power is so impressive and it’s really, really easy.
Pink for Spring – I know, groundbreaking but this Max Factor Creme Puff blusher in Lovely Pink is something special. A beautiful rosy pink that has teeny tiny gold specks running through which leaves a beautiful finish with a lovely, natural glow.
Such a perfect Spring shade that pairs beautifully with the Bourjois Healthy Mix foundation for fresh, dewy Spring ready skin!
Ever since my first Colourpop Haul, I’ve fallen well and truly in love with their eyeshadows. They’re so unique and the soft, almost bouncy, mousse-like shadows are insanely good. Their pigmentation beats nearly every other brand I know and I’m obsessed with the almost metallic sheen their shimmer shades embody.
‘Steele’ from the Amanda Steele collection is a beautiful pastel pink with a little bit of silver glitter in for good measure and I love it. I would recommend applying a white base underneath to really help this standout and it will need to be built up but it has everything I love Colourpop shadows for and it’s a shade you don’t see regularly. It’s easy to go over the top with pink in the Spring/Summer months but this is subtle enough to get away with.
As much as I adore pink (can you tell?), it’s not a shade that suits me on the lips, sadly. In Autumn/Winter months, browney-cool tone nudes are my favourites but I sometimes struggle in Spring/Summer but after a little rummaging around in my collection, I fell back in love with the YSL Rouge Volupte Lipstick in Peach Passion.
It’s creamy and soft but doesn’t fall short on colour. It’s beautifully pigmented and gives off a lovely, glossy finish. It’s still pink but the peach tones compliment me so much more than a blue-toned, straight pink and has there ever been a more perfect Summer lipstick?! There’s something so elegant about any of the products that YSL release and this lipstick is no exception.
The Nail Varnish
I adore gel-finish nail polishes. All the shine and longevity of a salon manicure without the cost or travel and you can do it in the comfort of your own home. The Bourjois La Laque Gel in Atti-nude* is a beautiful, creamy pale pink that’s beautifully flattering and professional.
These polishes give off a really lovely shine I just can’t achieve with some of my other polishes and whilst this particular shade is going to require a bit more time just because it’s so light and it does need to built up for the colour to really show (3 coats normally does the trick). Brights and neons can be really fun for Spring/Summer but there is something about more understated polishes that I’m really digging this season.
