The Summer Essentials

Summer Essentials

Tomorrow marks the very first day of June. June marks the regular appearances of ice-cream, pretty flowers, sandals, sunbathing… Summer. It may seem a bit grey and bleak today but everyone keeps telling me that sun and warmth is just around the corner, so now is the perfect time to gather up my Summer essentials…

The Body Stuff…

Deodorant is an essential all three hundred and sixty five days of the year but it’s the scent that really changes up this cosmetic every season. If you are someone that picks up a scented deodorant on your shopping trips, may I kindly lead you in the direction of the new Dove Soft Feel*? It’s beautifully light, comforting and feminine whilst doing what it does best; keeping you feeling fresh and a-ok all day. And of course, it’s Dove, a super purse-friendly brand that does what it says on the skin, perfect for holidays, beach days… all the days.

We all know how dangerous it is to sit and roast away in the sun and quite frankly, it’s not worth the risk. So, for those who like to be that little bit more bronzed, it’s time to reach for the bottle. If you’re don’t feel all too confident with applying fake tan, add the Rimmel Sun Shimmer Instant Tan and Gradual Glow to your virtual basket or the real thing if you happen to heading a Boots/Superdrug anytime soon. It promises and delivers all the benefits of going fake; a beautiful colour and no sun damage but also offers the easiness you want with tan. This can be washed off easily so any mistakes are easily fixable but what’s exciting is the Gradual Glow, every time you apply this it helps to keep the beautiful colour longer and longer. Beautiful sun-kissed tan without any sunbathing? Check.

Razor’s aren’t something that’s exciting to talk about it. Sure, I’ll give you that. But, if you want silky smooth, hair-free legs and all that, then we gotta talk about the razor. Mostly, razor’s aren’t something I think about massively when I buy, I simply see what’s on offer, have a quick look to make sure everything seems a-ok and then chuck it in my bag but Wilkinson Sword have done a one up and made their razor’s a little bit more exciting. After all, it’s the little things that make all the difference. Meet the Wilkinson Sword Quattro for Women Raspberry Rain Razor*, all the benefits of a normal razor, but with an amazing raspberry scent that lingers around for a little while nicely. Fun fact, if you’re going on holiday (or to the gym) this makes your wash bag smell really lovely. All-in-all, I love it as much as I am capable of actually loving a razor.

The Smelly Stuff…

I don’t know about you, but the perfumes head straight to the back of the shelf in Summer. I have my favourites, but musky heavy scents seem so heavy for the Summer so as soon as May hits, I swap my Ghost perfume for something a little bit fruiter and a little bit lighter.

The only tool you need for the job? The Body Shop Body Mists. At just £7.50 (I know, you could buy loads and go crazy and all that!) these are the perfect Summer accessory, The Body Shop don’t go halves on these, anything Summery and fruity you can think of, guaranteed The Body Shop have it in beautiful mist form. My current favourites are the Strawberry and the Mango Mists. They’re wonderfully delicate, fresh, fruity and so easy to store and travel with. Everyone will be getting a whiff of you this Summer (in a good way, of course!).

The Glowy Stuff…

Summer isn’t even Summer without that healthy glow, is it? Highlighting/strobing/whatever you wish to name it, is all the hype right now, no makeup look is complete without a beautiful, natural glow and a brilliantly sparkly highlighter sitting on those cheekbones. If, like me, you’re skin is more flat and dull as opposed to glowy and radiant, run to your nearest MAC store and pick up the wonderful Strobe Cream. It’s that tiny bit more on the pricey side, but that beautiful radiance it gives your skin is well worth every single penny. Mix it in with your foundation for a healthy radiance that’s going to make even the sun look a little bit more dull.

As for highlighter, I love cream formulas. They guide onto the skin beautifully, don’t settle and don’t give off that powdery finish. The Topshop Glow Stick has got the perfect amount of shimmer, and the wonderfully creamy formula allows you to blend so there’s none of those harsh glitter lines I sported at my year 6 school disco.

Lastly, if that still isn’t enough radiant goodness for ya, the Bourjois Poudre De Riz is the perfect finishing powder that has the ability to keep everything into place, counter-act that oiliness and add a beautiful glow that’s going to catch the light perfectly.

The Nail Stuff…

Having your nails perfectly manicured is the perfect accessory to a Summer tan. Let’s be perfectly honest, there are hundreds, if not thousands of nail polish choices, but, to help you out, I’ve managed to pick out three of my favourite brands, colours and formulas!

Tanya Burr Cosmetics offers one of my favourite nail formulas, the polish glides on easily, dries quickly and doesn’t chip straight away. They’re long lasting, is contained in lovely packaging and the colour collection is to die for. My particular favourite though? Fairy Godmother. A beautiful, washed-out, milky, pale blue that reminds me of those pretty blue flowers you see in fields dotted along the country side. Two coats and you’re ready to go; it’s so pretty, I can’t help but think that Tanya really ‘nailed’ it (see what I did there?… Didn’t find it funny? Oh. Ok) with these polishes.

We all know the Barry M Speedy Dry is one of my true love’s so I won’t go into crazy detail about this little gem, but Kiss Me Quick is the perfect Summer pastel pink! This dries so quickly you’ll still have time to have all the fun in Sun without having to take a good half hour to an hour out to give yourself a salon-worthy manicure. I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again, this has all the benefits of the permanent Barry M line (long lasting, opaque, easy) with the added extra of the speediness. You can’t go wrong!

Topshop’s nail line is so massively on point. With their cute packaging, every shade you can ever imagine and super purse-friendly price tag, it’s always worth popping in store (or online, of course) to have a browse of alllll the polishes. If you’re bored of the pastels and the pinks and want something that little bit more brighter, look no further than Topshop’s Wide Awake. A beautiful bright, almost neon but not that crazy orange shade that’s going to stand out, look amazing and compliment your tan like a dream!

The Lips Stuff…

There’s only one lipstick range I’m reaching for this Summer… the NYX Soft Matte Lip Creams are one of the most amazing liquid lipstick ranges we can get our hands on. With an extensive range of beautiful colours all named after equally beautiful locations, your colour limit is pretty endless with these! These are amazingly pigmented, beautifully creamy and soft and last for around a good five hours. I have Tokyo and Buenos Aires, a perfect light pink that doesn’t make your teeth look yellow and a beautiful peach tone that I wear pretty much everyday. What else do you need?!
