Spring Makeup The Basics

Spring Makeup The Basics

I might be ever so slightly ahead of the game but now that we are officially in March, we are only around eighteen days till the official start of Spring. Yep, you can almost sense it in the air, the days are getting ever so slightly longer and as I type this, the sun is shining and teasing us with a cool breeze. We might not be quite ready to fish out the shorts and sandals just yet so I thought a more appropriate topic would be Spring ready makeup. And today, I’m bringing you the basics!

The Base…

Whenever I think of Spring makeup, I always picture a really lovely, flawless but natural, dewy base. Gone are the days of a heavy coverage foundation, shove that to the back of your collection and start to find your lightweight BB creams or tinted moisturiser’s. Not only will you’re skin thank you for it, I find CC creams and the like do tend to have that beautifully dewy finish to them that just looks so glossy in the Spring time. Extra points if you can grab one with an SPF in, so important and means you can skip an extra step in the morning…. more time to spend outside! My choice is always the BareMinerals Complexion Rescue Gel; it’s lightweight, dewy, fresh and will cover up the odd blemish and discolouration.

The Contour…

Similarly to the base, I much prefer a more natural bronzed look in the Summer months, but there’s no need to ditch the contour! A bonus to the contour is all round bronzing up the skin. I like to use a massive fluffy brush to bronze up the areas of my face the sun would naturally hit (think forehead, nose and tops of cheekbones). Don’t go too overboard, it can easily look like contouring gone wrong, but a lovely natural look will make you look beautifully sun kissed, without the sun damage. Stick to a matte bronzer for this (or one with a small amount of shimmer), I’d recommend the wonderful The Body Shop Honey Bronzer, there’s several shades, allowing you to really find your perfect match!

The Blushers…

Pink, pink, pink! Light pink, bright pink, shimmery pink, you name it… anything goes! You can just never, ever go wrong with pink, ever! Perfect for brightening up the cheeks and also adding some radiance and glow. In the warmer weather I’d personally skip the cream blusher, especially if you do have oily skin and stick with a good old powder formula. The absolute perfect Spring blusher is the Max Factor Creme Puff Blush in Lovely Pink. A beautiful rose colour with some gold shimmer injected, doubling up as a highlighter whilst having the softest formula. It’s also a pretty famous dupe for the Hourglass blushes, which you all know I love! Looking for more than one and a perfect travel option? Look no further than the Sleek Blush By Three in Pink Lemonade, two beautiful powder options (left is the perfect dupe for NARS Orgasm) and one cream formula. Perfect!

The Powder…

Carrying on with the whole light, fresh and dewy thing I love for Spring. My favourite powder for this season is the Bourjois Poudre de Riz de Java, a beautiful, light powder that’s enough to set everything but isn’t cakey or heavy. It’s silky soft has a light rose scent and brightens up my complexion, leaving me looking healthy and flawless. This looks ever so slightly glittery in the pot, but once applied it really is the powder of dreams. This also catches the light effortlessly… it really is something special! Looks lovely, feels lovely, is lovely.

The Palette…

Bye bronzes, bye purples and navy’s…. I’m all about the light and shimmery this season! This one all depends on your budget but my favourite, perfect for Spring, palette has to be the Urban Decay Naked 3. It’s filled with beautiful pink and mauve hues, the odd shimmer, all the ingredients for a wonderful, light eye. At £38.50, I can understand it’s not at the top of everyone’s list, I personally think the soft, pigmented shadows, packaging and overall quality make it worth that price but, there is a dupe out there for just £4! The Makeup Revolution Iconic 3 Palette is a near on identical palette with only some slight differences. First off the packaging is obviously totally different and the shadows themselves aren’t as soft as Urban Decay’s but still easy to apply and work with. I have both palettes, and both are great, but due to this one’s compact size allowing it for a flawless travel experience, this is the one you need for Spring!

The Lip Pencil…

You simply cannot go wrong with a lip pencil. They allow for super easy application, tend to be in smaller size therefore easy for storing and travelling and if you’re buying them from NARS, you’ve got yourself a pretty fab pencil with a pretty incredible formula. The NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencil in Bolero is my choice this season. A perfect wash-out orange, leaning more towards the coral side that isn’t too bright but is bold enough for you to notice. The texture is creamy, smooth and has a matte finish. Top Tip: This doesn’t last crazy long, so it’s one to chuck into your handbag for added application throughout the day.

The Lip Crayon…

More of a crayon girl? I’ve got you! The Bourjois Colour Boost Lipstick in Peach on The Beach is one you just need to own! Again, the crayon shape and size means it’s incredibly easy to apply and get on with your day in the sun. Essential. This is beautiful peach colour leaning ever so slightly to a bright pink and the difference with this and Bolero is that this has a more creamy formula, think lip balm, and offers you a beautiful sheen on your lips. It’s moisturising, soft and absolute perfect for last-minute applications before you head out. One of my all-time Spring/Summer favourites!

The Lipsticks…

I had trouble narrowing down lipsticks. I have too many. I love too many… there are just so many beautiful pink’s and peaches and corals and I just can’t fully decide on the most perfect Spring shade but I have managed to pick two of my close favourites! MAC’s Creme Cup is for the ones who prefer a much pigmented lip and don’t want to fully let go of the nudes yet. A beautiful dusty pink with a tiny addition of beige that really does suit everyone. Looking for something a little more luxurious? Yves Saint Laurent Rouge Volupté in Nude Beige takes the crown for the most beautiful packaging and doesn’t fall short on the colour either. A perfect, milky pink that isn’t too light and won’t wash you out, it’s moisturising, incredibly creamy and one you’ll want to wear all day, everyday.

The Polishes…

No Spring Makeup guide would be complete without some nail polishes. The options are pretty open but if there is three I would recommend, it would have to be: a white, a pink (obvs) and pastels. All the pastels. A white nail colour formula can be a funny one, sometimes it can resemble tip-ex, other times it’s streaky and patchy, but, hold your breath… I may have just found the most perfect one. Essie’s Blanc really is up there in the list of my favourite polishes ever! It has a wonderfully creamy formula, is fully opaque and glossy in two coats and doesn’t chip (or stain) easily. The white itself is gorgeous, and the mani always looks even and beautiful! For the pink, you can’t go wrong with a Barry M Super Dry option. Freestyle is a beautiful milky pink injected with a nude base that really is pretty fab. The formula is quick but doesn’t compromise on quality and the colour could not be more suited to this season. Lastly, the call for pastels is pretty wide open but an example here of a formula and colour I love is the Nails Inc Alexa Polish. A beautiful milky blue and a wonderful formula to match. Also, the bottle itself is gorgeous and the thin brush makes application precise.

The Fragrance…

Now before you judge… this smells beautiful! One Direction have brought out a few perfumes now, but this one, without a doubt, is the nicest and best suited for Spring… I promise! Our Moment is sweet but manages to avoid being sickly, it’s floral and soft,it’s girly but isn’t overwhelming. Oh, and the packaging is quite discreet for 1D!

And there we have it! You’re perfect options for filling up your Spring makeup bag! Hands up who’s ready for the new season? Have a lovely weekend!
